Friday,
March 27, 1998—Telephone Pioneers Shelter.
On Wednesday, March 18, rain & clouds, and a sheet of ice on the rocks, so I
stayed put. Thursday, it was the cloudy and drizzly, but after Howard, I hiked.
Wasn’t as rocky as I thought it was going to be, and there was a long stretch of
old woods road walking. Coming down Mount Minsi was easy, and I finally got
below the clouds, and was able to get photos of Delaware Water Gap. Stayed at the
Ramada Inn, and on Friday, March 20 I took a cab to the bus station in
Stroudsburg. Stayed at Bill’s till Tuesday, March 24. While at Bill’s, I
upgraded my computer with some more RAM, and Windows 95. Tuesday night I took a train
to Pawling, NY, and walked the three and a half miles to this shelter. Haven’t
felt like hiking the past two days, so I didn’t, but I walked back to Pawling for pizza and extra food. Spring is here, and supposed to get up to 70°
today. Caught sunrise at Cat Rocks this morning. This is going to be my first
hiking day in a long time in shorts and a tee-shirt.
Saturday, March 28—Morgan Stewart Shelter.
What a warm day! Hazy and a little humid. I did sweat a bit going uphill.
And definitely felt the effects of my time off . . . . Just caught sunset from
about .3 of a mile south of the shelter. Wow! Got to see the Sun
rise and set in the same day. Boy, am I beat, and over-medicated.
Sunday, March 29—RPH Shelter.
80° today. I was lethargic this morning, but I got my shit together and got
moving. Not long after crossing I84, I ran into Skeeter ’92, who I met at the
Long Trail Inn, last year. Bullshitted for a bit, then went our separate ways.
Stopped at the Mountaintop Deli, off of Route 52. Great place! Great people!
Great food! Prosciutto! Then only place near the trail to get this delicacy! Too hot today! While climbing Hosner Mountain, I smelled
something, that I just knew I really didn’t like smelling. At first it was a passing smell,
almost marijuana like, but heavier. Fire! The first alarm was around 12:45 PM.
Two more alarms by 1:30 PM. Started to see smoke around 1:00 PM. I’d joked that
I was going to be burned to death, then burn for all eternity in hell, so I decided
to just keep going towards the smoke. Just as I was getting in heavy enough smoke to
make my eyes water, the trail took a right turn away from the smoke. The fire was
somewhere down Miller Hill Road, which is the same road that the AT crosses the
Taconic State Parkway by. My knees is not as swollen as yesterday, but it is swollen a
little bit.
Tuesday, March 31—Anthony’s Nose.
Sunday was hot and I had a hard time hiking. Told a biker to get off the
trail. No water at Dennytown Road Group Campsite except for a swamp water
stream. I filtered and used it for cooking dinner and hot chocolate yesterday
morning. Stay there to listen to Howard and didn’t start hiking until 11:00 AM.
Found good water near noon. Too hot and sunny, I got burnt. Wanted to take a
long break Canapus Hill, but it was too open to the sun, so I continued on to
Denning Hill and stayed there from 3 to 5:00 PM. Blew by Graymoor, and stopped
at Citgo for soda on Route 9. Night hiking was fun and until the steep downhill
from Canada Hill, I had a great burst of energy. Must have been the Jolt I had
at the Citgo. Made it to Anthony’s Nose by 8:45 PM. Laid out under the stars and
above the lights of the valley below. Couldn’t find a good view for
sunrise this morning, but took a few obscured photos anyway. Gonna stay at Fort
Montgomery tonight. I’m hungry, but I’m staying here at Anthony’s
Nose to listen
the Howard dominate Shane.
