Comments: Hello, I have just finished Bill Bryson's "A Walk in the Woods" about his attempt at hiking the whole AT! It was great to be able to put pictures to the story, the book is very good at relating the history of the trail plus fabulous descriptions of fellow hikers! Recomended reading! Happy hiking.
Comments: How do I like your site? I love it. I just finished reading the book "A Season on the Appalachian Trail" among others and now I finally have pictures to go with all of the places on the trail. I'm in Colorado now but I was out visiting my dad in MD a m nth ago and hiked some of the trail south of Gathland State Park to a shelter...a real nice one I guess...that's what everyone hiking through wrote. Anyway I brought a bunch of beer down for anyone who'd be through hiking but nobody showed up. Boo-hoo, y boyfriend and I had to drink it all!!!!(Yum) Anyway we plan on hiking the AT in the summer of 2001 so how much money do we need? Aside from all our gear? What is the best thing about hiking the AT? Do you ever feel like you're going insane? Curious potential hiker....Nina
Comments: I am planning a thru hike and if anyone had any good tips I would love to hear them. thanks
Comments: Your site made me "homesick". Thanks
Comments: Hi Kirk, went for a little hike last weekend and talked to 2 thru hikers, one was the Red Baron, didn't catch the other ones name, heading north, almost to the 1/2 way point. It was so hot and humid, don't know how they kept going! They said they were stopp ng for ice cream and were going to see who could down a 1/2 gallon first, anyway they were 2 very nice guys. I hope they are ok and fully recovered from their brainfreeze! Take Care.
Comments: I signed your guestbook before I "viewed" it and discovered that Karen is the only one wrighting. I thought I would put my two cents worth in. I don't know where you are or what your doing at the moment but it sounds like life is "free" for the time bei g. Keep it that way. I don't know what to say exactly so if you make an effort to email me I guess you could ask the questions and I "might" answer. Take care!!!
Comments: I thru hiked in '98. Nice to see some familiar photos on the net. Loved the one of Greylock! Keep living the spirit!!
Comments: LOL! that must be a NJ thing,my husband says the same thing sometimes when asked where he is from. He is from Neptune, NJ.Loved the Maine link I love Baxter, the main reason..... no campers!!! I don't think you could get one in there if they were allowed, the road through the park is real rough. Take care!
Comments: Where am I from? In the past I've answered that question by saying that I'm came from my mothers womb! So from that sarcastic answer you may be able to deduce that I grew up in New Jersey. I've lived there for most of my life, but now I'm staying with y sister & niece in Florida, and plan to stay in florida for a while. The hardest part of moving here isn't the heat, but being so far away from mountains. But I do love the ocean, and it's so much nicer here than NJ. I'm adding a link to my Maine jour al 1997 that appeared on Wingfoot's Trailplace. Check it out. Peace, kurt
Comments: Cops.. their great. huh?! From what I have seen they have this authority thing going, when you get the better of them they can't stand it!( not all, just some)Surprised you were still in DC,scary place I think. Ya know back in 94 we were stuck in traffic n a bridge going into DC,had a cb in our car and heard some truckers talking about a bomb threat, turns out this guy was threatening to blow the bridge up.Didn't know the details til we got home that night and heard it on the news! Was wondering, where ar you from? We are about 2 miles W. of Caledonia S.P., we hike that area alot have been as far as Pine Grove Furnace, haven't gone much S.Maybe we will see ya sometime! Take care.
Comments: Thursday 04/29/99 - Library of Congress, Washington, DC: Funny thing happened to me today, at least depending on your sense of humor. I was cooking & eating breakfast at the refreshment stand at the base of the Washington Monument at around 6:30 am. A ound 7 am, the cops were crawling all over the place cuz of a bomb threat. They surrounded the area, and wouldn't let anyone in, and told those that did get in to leave immediately, everyone but me. They kind of overlooked me. So since I wasn't asked t leave the area, I didn't. At around 8 am, they didn't find anything, so the cops opened up the area surrounding the Monument. Since the coast was clear, I went to the a nearby bathroom, to take care of that call of nature. When I came out of the bathr om, I was almost immediately stopped by a cop, who asked for my ID, and given the fifth degree. He told me that I was stupid to stay when I knew that they had sealed off the area, to which I replied there was no law that I knew of against being stupid, a d if there was, most of Congress would be in Jail. He didn't think that I was that funny, and told me that I was breaking the law by being in a sealed off area. I told him straight out that I was not trying to hide, that I was in plain sight, and so sin e nobody actually told me that I was in a sealed off area, I couldn't be breaking any law. Plus I reminded him that as soon as he came up to me and asked me for some ID, that I was immediately cooperative, and produced my ID. Logic won the day, and he old me to get lost. Wouldn't it have been so much better if my humor had won him over? Is there some genetic flaw in most cops that prevents them from getting a joke, and getting pissed off, when someone they are interragating tells one? Well, I'm off o Harpers Ferry, gonna hike the C & 0 Canal Path to there, and see what happens. Peace! kurt
Comments: Hi again! Yep, we kinda figured the toughest part to be in Maine, but wasn't sure.Keep writing about your travels, we enjoy it!We have been to Baxter twice camping, beautiful park.We hope to someday be able to hike the whole AT, but til then,we enjoy just hearing about it. Take care!
Comments: Tuesday, April 27th, 1999. Today I'm logging in from the Library of Congress, in DC. My hike is done as I'm out of money. Worse things could have happened, like another tree limb hitting me on the head. Actually one missed me by two feet on the way up to Quarry Gap Shelter. So this hikes totals: between 2/3 to 3/4 of New York, 1/2 of New Jersey, and all of Pennsylvania, Maryland, & West Virginia. A good start on my second section hike of the AT. Don't have much to say right now, as I'm trying to fig re out what to do next, like how do I get out of DC with only 7 dollars? Not all that worried though, I still have a few day of food left. Oh well, enough about me, at least I don't own a trenchcoat! :^) Peace. kurt
Comments: Just got back from a hike(just as small one, were not as hardcore as you!)Saw your address in the book at S. Mountain and had to check it out, great site! My husband and I were wondering where is the toughest part of the AT?
Comments: April 4, 1999. Came home from Duncannon, PA for Easter to be with my family. My belly is bloated from this day's gluttony, but that feels good. After enjoying myself at my Uncle's wedding last month, I hit the trail just in time for the Nor'easter that dumped 8" of heavy snow on the AT in NJ. My tendonitis flaired up, and I struggled & limped my way to Delaware Water Gap, where I stayed the night at the Church of the Mountain Hostel, where I was healed. Then I headed towards Wind Gap, PA, where I lost the AT last year heading northbound, so when I found the place this time, I built a little stone wall so other hikers wouldn't do the same dumb thing I did. That same day, a tree limb fell on my head & broke in half. The tree won the bout on a standing KO, because I was in no shape to defend myself. Coming down into Lehigh Furnance Gap, I kept waiting for the little nasty section I remembered hiking up last year, only to find out, once I got to the road, that last year I took a PA Game Trail that hooke up to the AT with out me ever realizing it. I wondered how many "Purist's" have done the same thing & not known it! Last weekend at Rauch Gap Shelter, there were around 50 Boy Scouts camped near the shelter, but I got a good nights sleep anyway. When I hike out of Duncannon, after a hit & run Shower, Laundry, Food & Beer stop, I got to the next shelter and couldn't motivate myself to hike on to Boiling Springs, so after two nights at the same shelter, I hiked back to Duncannon, and hitched to Harrisburg PA, and took a couple of trains home for Easter. So tomorrow I'm headed to Harpers Ferry, WV to hike north to at least Boiling Springs, PA. Almost forgot that I met my first northbounder, 2 miles north of Duncannon, Hooper AT '95. We sat, BS'ed, and c ained smoked for about 45 minutes, he started last November, and has been taking his time, enjoying himself. My kind of hiker! Have Fun, kurt
Comments: Fri. 3/12/99 - I'm at the Sloatsburg Public Library, on my way to my Uncle's Wedding. It's been a bit cold the last week and a half, but the trail magic doesn't stop cause of the weather. I'd like to thank the friars of Greymoor for their hospitality la t Sunday, a hot meal (that I didn't have to cook) was a prayer answered. And the beef stew more than made up for all the whining about the cold Wednesday night at Wm. Brien Memorial Shelter, from three guys on spring break. Other highlights so far, thre wild turkeys leading my way to Morgan Stewart Shelter, and the clear view I had from West Shelter of New York City, not to mention the snow and ice that made the scenery so pretty that I wish I'd brought my camera! The Lowlights: getting over tendeniti in my good knee, & watching a small section of trail being destoyed just north of RPH Shelter. Back to the train station to wait for a train. Have Fun, kurt
